Deer antler overlays?
« on: April 02, 2014, 07:16:00 PM »
Any of you guys use em and do they finish out good. I am a little concerned about the porous center but I think I can fill with thin CA and sand thin to remove most of the center.

For looks is it better to use the antler near the base for the rough look? Or do you guys use a smooth portion of the horn so it can be polished out.

Any pics would be cool!

Thanks
Cory

Don't worry about the pores, fill them if you need to.
I file and sand mine , I haven't left the rough outside on mine
you can polish them too.
You can cut your pieces and soak them in hydrogen peroxide over night, makes them a brighter white

I like to use the burl for an arrow rest, also! That one looks good and is even on the correct side of the bow!   :archer:

does the overlay help reinforce the tip or is it just for looks? i only use b55 so its not ff compatible..would that be ok?

everyones different,
but on my gnarley, snakey self bows, i dont like to put tip overlays on, i like to keep the focus on the stave, but on anything laminated or with a backing, or even a very straight selfbow- then i put overlays on, and the glass bows get them too obviously.
if using FF, just pad the loops i believe- i use b50 right now, but when i buy again i am going to try some FF.
i have tried all sorts of tip overlays, but i have come to the conclusion lately that the best overlay material for me, is horn( not antler- but horn) works up easily and beautifully, and has a real depth too it- but thats just me- but i can appreciate all the other overlays too!!
