Satin finishes with Tbird?
« on: April 05, 2014, 12:53:00 PM »
So I'm switching from poly finish to thunderbird and wanted to know how best to get a satin finish?  I've heard people say that they do all the under coats with gloss, then use satin on the last coat or two.  My question is, who here has used just the satin finish? Also, would it be possible to do gloss tbird, then finish with truoil and 'satin-ize'it? What do y'all recommend here?

When you use just satin you finish will not be as durable, also it will be cloudy. No way around it if you want a quality finish. You could use Tbird then hit a light coat of satin with a rattle can.

I have used just the satin finish on a bunch of bows. It may not be as durable as gloss, but all-satin T-bird is more durable than any other finish I've used, and that includes Fullerplast.

Depending on the color, sometimes a bow may end up with a very slightly 'frosted' look, though I wouldn't call it cloudy. I have not been unhappy with a bow sprayed beginning to end with satin.

I recommend first getting just the satin T-bird and spraying a bow with it. If you're not happy with how it looks, then get the gloss too for base coats of future bows.

I would NOT put T-bird, a #1 quality finish, on my bow, and then put ANYthing else/less over top of it, but that's just me.

I started with the gloss and lightly sanded it with 0000 steel wool to bring the gloss off a bit. Then I went to satin but felt it was a little glossier than I wanted. Now I'm using flat and to me it looks like what I'd call satin so I've been spraying a light final mist coat that leaves a textured look and I like it a lot. It still reflects more than I feel a flat should though.

I use the gloss and after its cured completely I sand with oooo steel wool and then finish it off with a high quality paste furniture wax that I got from Woodcraft (don't recall the brand name it was 15.00- 20.00 for the can). This wax has some kind of solvent in it and dries to an extremely hard and dull finish after wiping the bow down. Been doing it this way for years and even my bowfishing bow that gets thrown into the bottom of the boat has held up to the abuse.

I do gloss and on the last coat I hit it with a coat of 2 parts flat,1 part gloss.
