storing bowyers tools

How do you all store your bowyers tools?  Rasps, draw knives, etc.  I only have a garage, not a separate shop space. Wondering how to prevent rust on my tools?

As far as I know, keeping the humidity down and keeping your tools oiled is the only way to keep the rust off, along with regular maintenance.  I have a lot of problems with it here on the coast.  Maybe try a dehumidifier? A wire wheel would make it a lot easier to get off what does start to form.

Mine are kinda spread out on the workbench either under or on piles of wood dust

I keep my tools rust free by using them. They are normally just sitting on my work bench like Eric.

Mine are in my bag, on my bench, and some on the wall. I've been thinking of a magnetic setup much like chefs use to hold knives for my scrapers and other small tools used regularly. It's not uncommon I'm digging through shavings on the floor looking for misplaced tools. Rust hasn't been much of an issue, however my basement where I do my work is rather dry.

I hang most all my tools on the wall near my workbench in my garage shop.  Cleaning your rasps with a file card after use will help keep any moisture in the wood out of the small cavities.....which will cause rust.  Wiping your scrapers down with a light coat of oil after sharpening will keep them in good shape.
Like Pat said, using them and a little TLC will keep them in good condition.

get a $2 stripping brush from the paint department of any store for cleaning rasps and files. stiff nylon easier on your rasps and files than file card.

when I put my tools up for any length of time, like during hunting season, I brush them clean, blow them off with compressed air and hose them down with spray silicone. does a nice job of keeping corrosion at bay. sawdust and such left on tools draws moisture, which encourages rust. saw and jointer tables get blown off and wiped down with silicone, too.

My drawknives hang on the wall if I'm not using them.  I keep all my rasps in sections of bike inner tubes to protect them.

thanks for the replies. I build only about 1 bow per year anymore, sometimes takes me months to do.

During the off season I keep all tools inside

During bow building season I keep them stored in the garage and take good care of them. Will consider what you have said. Thanks to all!!

After use, my bowyers tools are sharpened, oiled and wrapped in newspaper. Then stored in a draw. Jawge

Mine hang on the wall behind the bench... within arm's reach of the vice and at the ready at all times.

I consider myself an organized person but find frustration in my inability to organize better than I do Re: subj.  I relate to the above quote.

When I get a moment, I want to build narrowly layered shelves from wood so everything is within arms reach and has a designated spot to reside; sharpened edges engaging nothing but wooden shelf.  I avoid contact with my sharpened blades or file/rasp teeth with anything that would compromise their integrity.

One could never be too organized IMO.

I have places to hang all my tools behind my work bench, on the wall. I have a bunch more I use for gun building that I keep in drawers. If the weather is humid I spray my files and rasps with Rem Oil before I put them up.
