Spar urethane not drying
« on: August 17, 2014, 12:50:00 PM »
Finished at bow with a cocobola and paduke (excuse my spelling) riser. Sealed with several coats of super glue, buffing with steel wool between coats. Then sprayed three coats of Deft high gloss, with no issues drying. For a final coat, to cut down on the gloss, I sprayed one coat of spar urethane, on Friday. The spar urethane is dry on the paduke, but is still sticky on the cocobola. Do I need to strip the riser down, or will it dry over the next week?

After sealing with super glue and three coats of Deft, I would not of thought that I would have a drying issue with the Spar.

I know you can't spray spar over auto clearcoat, turns gummy...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

It sounds as if you just didnt get enough super glue on over the coco. This is why I use Fullerplast but just everyone can go buy a gallon of it plus catalyst and thinner.Too expensive unless you use it a lot.

I had the same issue with my coco bow. I sealed it completely with Deft and it was fine until I put on a couple coats of Defthane. I ended up going back over it with a few coats of Deft and just left it. It's my hunting bow and if the Deft doesn't hold up to weather I'll just refinish it after hunting season. Most, if not all oil based finishes will react with the oils in the coco and not cure.

Most times you can spray urethane over the lacquer finishes but not the other way. The super glue should have sealed the coco good enough. So it must be a finish issue.
