Bocote won't dry
« on: August 22, 2014, 02:19:00 PM »
I used Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane 6 coats, 1 every 1/2 hour

fiber glass and osage are dry, bocote not dry

it's been 2 days, seems like it might be drying some

it's tacky

I have used cocobolo and pau fero in bows. Both are oily like Bocote. I also use Spar Urethane. You have to seal the bocote before using Spar Urethane. I sealed one with super glue once and didn't like the gas coming off the bow during the process.. Kirk L recomended Bullseye Shellac and I like it better than super glue

I wiped on shellac to check for sanding scratches and then sanded it again.
I must have sanded threw, did not know it had to be sealed.

Mark, be sure and post pictures when you get the bow dry.  We would like to see your design.  LF

I've been sealing oily woods with CA but it is a bastard and I think I'm also going to go to the dewaxed shellac. Woodcarver 2 did that for the wsap bow he sent me and it came out very nice

This Quick Clean Sealer (which used to be called Thunderbird) will dry on it pretty quickly.

I put three coats of the gloss on it, wait a day, then put one coat of Miniwax fast drying satin polyurethane over that.

Just for future reference, there are finishes that will dry over any of those oily woods... Thunderbird epoxy and Fullerplast are two of them. I think they would dry over a friggin' mud puddle  :)
