Selfbow build along......
« on: September 02, 2014, 01:59:00 PM »
Hello, is there a thread that is probably one of the best selfbow buildalongs that will explain the tools needed as well as picking the stave and working it etc..... I'm a novice with the want to build my own but not a clue how to. Working on finishing up my atl atl and look forward to the natural progression..... Thanks  ;)

Here's my older website:   http://sticknstring.webs.com/

There are tutorials on several things.  Look at the left hand side of the page.

Here's a tute on tillering:  http://hedgerowselfbows.webs.com/fromblanktobow.htm

If you ever find yourself on the southside of Indy, let me know.  You can stop in and chat.

I work in Zionsville and drive by Allison's a few times a week.  Let's meet for lunch sometime.

Here's a buildalong I started this winter:   http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=011410;p=1

I'm reminded that I could finish this bow now.

Craig, you can also check out Sam Harper's poorfolkbows site. He does a lot of board bows but the fundamentals on tillering are well covered and could help. There are also numerous build-alongs in the How-to section of this site. So much information it will make your head spin. Good luck and post your progress.

Hey John, was wondering when that turbo build was going to get finished. That is a great example of how quickly a bow can be made, but also how patience is the greatest virtue in bow building.

A lot of great information thank you gentlemen...... One more question though. Where would a fellow go online to find a nice Osage or yew stave? That mollegabett style bow is speaking to me :)Thanks again

I've bought 3 osage staves on ****.  You have to have a very critical eye when you're looking at the pictures of the prospective stave and make sure you reread the stave dimensions so you know what your getting.  Knowing what to look for as far as early to late wood ratio is really important, too.  O/w if you google "osage or yew staves for sale" you should find some outfits that sell them.  Expect some sticker shock when you see the prices.  That's why I gamble on ****.   ;)

I see they won't let me use the name ****, probably because they aren't a sponsor.  Talking about the big online auction site.
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

Rattlestick by Gary Davis is an excellent DVD on the subject. He also sells osage blanks.

YouTube has some good selfbow building videos too
