how to handle this

Guy's I'm refinishing a Tim Meigs l/b. trying to sand close to but not remove the lettering and signature.it's not working out well,it seems like I will see the old finish under the new when done.is it "OK" to re-write the signature?how do you handle this? Burt

I have saved them by working around them, and have also completely removed them after taking close up photos and then replicated wording, numbers, signatures, and trademark insignias during complete refinishes and the owners couldnt tell I did it  :)  pain in the butt, but doable.
