form for reverse handle LB
« on: October 23, 2014, 12:34:00 AM »
I'm in the process of designing a reverse handle longbow. My question to the glass bowyers is do you design the form with the back down or the back up so you can have the full strip of glass on the back? I hope people understand what I mean, with the back down on a normal handle bow you leave the handle section open because it has no glass on it.

I use the same form for a backset reverse handle as I do for a string follow normal. So, that means belly down for the reverse handle. I still run my glass over the entire back which helps keep the bow from looking like it was just strung backwards. The hose and pressure strips do just fine with the back up.

I always do my forms now with the back down.

I have not built a reverse handle longbow.. I have built forward riser recurves..using a form like the one pictured (the form is not 100% complete in this picture)..I can drill a 1/4" hole in each belly lamination and belly glass to hold it in the center of the form, no left and right slippage of belly lams and riser. I do not have to cut the glass I just carefully drill a 1/4" hole in center of glass and tapers. the belly side of riser is flat, I can change the height of riser too.

This is an example of the forward riser recurve I build. the place where I drill the 1/4" index pin is sanded away where I shape the grip area. Mr Dick Wightman built a few forward riser longbows, you might be able to search for some of his "build alongs" ??

this is my D/R hybrid bow form, back side down on this form. I have to sand the back of riser perfect to fit in the form, sometimes this is a pain some times it comes out nice in a few minutes..I now have a pattern sander and a jig to grind the risers and it gets me very close quickly. Brad and Canopy both have outstanding skills.
