how to achieve a matte or satin finish on botuff

hi just wondering if there is a good way to achieve a matte finish on the surface of botuff, I tried sanding with 0000 steel wool and got it but it left little scratches in the botuff that can be seen, is there a way that I can buff out the scratches without getting a glossy look?

Are the scratches actually in the fiberglass, or in the finsh you put over it? If in the finish, what finish did you use? How many coats?

There are rubbing compounds and techniques, better than steel wool, that can be used to dull many finishes.

it's in the finish, I used polyurethane semi-gloss I put three coats on it, it was out of a spray can not a spray gun

oh and they are very faint scratches its not bad just bugging the heck out of me

Sometimes I use satin spar urethane and after getting final coat, hold the can back about 20" and go over again til you like it. Some of the finish starts drying in that distance and gives the matte finish (tiny splatters)
