take down sleeve question
« on: January 13, 2015, 03:05:00 PM »
i used a steel and brass take down sleeve from 3 rivers and i used the smooth-on ea40 epoxy they recommended, but when drawing the bow the first few times there was a crackling sound coming from the sleeve, after shooting it a few times (the sound was a very hard psychological hurdle to clear) the top the glue in the steel side on the top limb has completely failed.  I can wiggle the wood inside the sleeve just a little.  so i gotta re-do it, just not sure why it would be doing that.  it was a pretty snug fit to get the wood into the sleeve, not like "hammer required" snug... more like "umph required", so maybe its starved for glue?  brass side seems to be fine.  any takers?

ok so i got the limb out of the sleeve, and it wasn't badly starved, 100% coverage on the wood with maybe 70% contact with the steel, but it didn't bond well with the steel.  probably should abrade and clean it for the next try.  clean with what?

Three Rivers recommends MT-13 for the installation of the sleeves not smooth on.  I've done three so far, the first two I purchased from Three Rivers and used MT-13.  The third one I made the brass and steel sleeves myself and installed with JB Weld with no problems.  The third one was sent to my recipient in last years trade, I hope it is holding up ok for him.
All of that being said, I always rough up both the wood and the inside of the sleeves

Was your billet very dry before gluing on the sleeve?
One of my rookie mistakes was making a takedown with a stave that was at about 12% m.c. after a week or two inside it dried further and then wobbled....I could have cried! Lesson learnt now though!
Also you MUST thoroughly degrease the inside of the sleeve and rough it up with 60/80 paper.
