Need your opinion.
« on: January 26, 2015, 08:31:00 AM »
I glued up the first glass bow on the form I showed a few days ago.
I think one should tell one`s mistakes as well as success. Well, I did a real stupid mistake. I usually double check everything during glue up, but managed to oversee that the glass going up the fade had slipped and was riding on top one of the side supports. See picture. The result  was that only half the width of the fade was glued properly. I will not finish the handle section, but have roughly shaped the limbs (the bow can be shot and it shoots nicely) so it can serve two purposes, to show what poundage the stack yielded and to see how the limbs bend with the thickness tapers I used. I used one parallel and two .0015 tapers going up the ramps, should be a total of a .003 taper. I wonder if a .002 taper would have been better. Will you take a look at how it bends and tell me what you think. The bow came in real light only 30 at 28. It is 66" long and was made for a long draw. 19" long handle section.I"ll post a few pics. Bue--.

Bummer on the glue up- it looks like it is bending nice with the .003 taper.

Looks like the limbs are bending nice to me, only way to find out which you like better is to build one with a .002 taper too...

sorry Bue- looks great otherwise- could some warm smooth on be dribbled in there, just to make a shooter for yourself.
nice riser section too!

Dang, that's a shame on that riser boo boo.  At least it makes me feel better about my own (secret) mistakes!

I think the bend looks good.  Did you use tip wedges?

you can flood those gaps with CA--and it is the compression side-might be fine
as far as your taper rate--it looks like a good bend for a long draw IMO--going down in taper will bend out of the fades sooner-and work against your string angle--it looks like its about to reach 90* in the 30"photo
I like a very thin [.020"]-6-7" long tip wedge
it may seem like the tips are rigid but I find the tip wedges improve shot feel

so Michael, what are the advantages, and cons of tip wedges in the D/R bows
i want to try that next time.
does it shorten the working area of the limb- improving performance, and help reduce whip tiller thus improving string angle- never done it before- but want to try one.

----kind of a question that you answered yourself!ha!
--to shorten working area--technically yes ...but in this limb the last 9-10"limb are acting as a lever bending the mid section-but my theory is the tip section is bending some -and returning the energy late--by stiffening the section it becomes a more efficient lever also by allowing some narrowing of the section [faster return to brace]
--string angle--this limb has a nice "d" shape that the TW would not effect the string angle much
IMO it would benefit shot feel first then add some performance--it looks like a great bow!!
and let it be known I'm still learning--but this caught my eye because I've been tweaking a very similar limb for the last couple of years
--the TW was an improvement--just think thin-- .015 in the total stack can be 5lbs and this out on the tips[real stiff!]--I make mine.018--.020 tapered to nothing [like thick paper!]

If you just want to experiment with this you can add some tip wedges to the belly...

Squirt some smooth on I there, clamp that sucker down and don't look back.

Taper rate seems perfect. I really like it.
