How much to round off a hickory backing?
« on: March 18, 2015, 07:36:00 PM »
Hey guys

Hoping to get a hickory backed tri on the tree tonight.

How much do you round the edges of the hickory?
..I faceted and rounded the belly.

Seems like the backing being so thin should just get a nice rounding with sandpaper....while being sure the core doesn't "stick out" from the sides farther than the backing.
...am I on the right track?

thanks

Round that **** good.

You can't really round too much, but you can round too little,

So basically, round it the right amount and you'll be good  :)

I usually give about 3 or 4 scrapes with a scraper held at different angles than sand it smooth. The old books used to say to round the edges to the diameter of a pea; that's about 1/4". I don't go quite that far.

Yep, I do just like Pat said... 5 or 6 swipes with the cabinet scraper on each corner at varying angles, then sand it with 150 grit, then 240. Done. Less than 'pea radius' I think.
