need a riser block
« on: April 01, 2015, 12:42:00 PM »
My hunting buddy wants me to build him a one piece recurve for hunting. He wants me to use some of the "olive ash burl" veneers I have on hand in the limbs. I need to glue up a  1 3/4" wide riser with red and black glass reinforcement for this project. I can get by with anything 4/4 thru 8/4 and at least 18" long if I add a powerlam.. but 22" would be perfect. I am thinking figured Mango or nice Myrtle might look good with the veneers. I do not have any of these two in stock.. I will have to buy it.. The wood would need to be dry enough to glue up. Anybody have a suggestion on what would look nice with olive ash burl? And a good source? I looked at Troys and BigJims site already. The local wood guy I found last year has passed away recently so I'm back to buying on the internet..

Pau Ferro looks really good with olive ash.  Try Mike at rosewood archery.

Bocote, Pau Ferro, Macassar Ebony, all look good with the olive ash. Of course I personally like darker woods so am biased.

I am getting a piece of Myrtle from Mike.. I have some Bocote, Pau fero, East Indian Rosewood and other Rosewoods. i was thinking something lighter would look better? I sometimes have trouble matching woods.this is the veneer I am working with..

WE have been so busy that I have been unable to get any wood or veneers posted. I have a huge supply though. That would look great with some zircote too.

Thanks, bigjim

Jim, next time I will call..Mark, those are ILF limbs that I am still "prototyping"..but I think the ones on the right are ones that are the best..the ones on the left just need a little edge sanding to narrow the last 6 inches a little..

Thanks, I have enough for 8 more bows..I just got some Chestnut Burl for veneers..and some ash burl. I might have to dye the ash, its a little light colored. I may spend all day Saturday cutting veneers, and making another new ILF form. I got a used 17" Morrison Phoenix 2 riser yesterday and am looking around for other used ILF risers to play with..I need to build Helen a set of ILF Short limbs.. she is shooting 42# SF carbon woods now, since she shoots Olympic style outdoors the light colored ash burl may be a good choice for her..

I was looking around the shop today and found a 1/2 inch thick birds eye maple board. My friend is a huge Georgia Bull Dog football fan and wants lots of red and black in the riser..I havn't glued this up yet.. would this look good as a riser? It should be strong there is 4 black and 2 red pieces of uniweft between each 1/2"  boards. I wiped a little denatured alcohol on then snapped a quick picture.I added a pic of the veneers I will be using..I am open to any suggestion, feel free to express your opinion..

I have used uniweft in risers a time or two and could see the weave in the glass.  It showed up as much lighter than the glass color.  I now prefer to use core tuff for accents. Trux is right that will be a great looking riser.

That riser would be beautiful, I tend to like the riser a little darker than the limbs as my personal pref.

I've had the whitish marks Jess was talking about. If on tips, you can sharpie them before spraying, but with red and black, that isn't an option.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I'm gonna glue it up today..I can always use it on another build if it dosent look like a good match. I have some other options including some darker Rosewoods. I do have concerns with the uniweft weave showing, I have used it before and didnt have a problem with it. I am building a hunting bow so it dosn't have to be too pretty
