i have a question about wedge length.
« on: May 16, 2015, 10:51:00 AM »
Hello everyone. Im new to the site and new to building bows. Ive made one and it was a never ending fight. The saw i used at work didnt cut the limb pads sqaure. I didnt notice this till after i made my limbs and put the bow together. I cut one limb off center and those two issues were the main problem. I was close to getting it lined up. I stopped the build. Made a new riser block and ordered new limbs from bingham. I laminated the riser block out of oak floor boards. Anyways i guess my question is about the length of the wedge. I believe binghams wedge for a 64"-68" is 10.5". Would a shorter wedge make a smoother or lighter limb?

The wedge length affects the working length of the limb. So yes, it will affect the feel of the draw. The Bingham's designs have been built by many and are proven. I would follow their prints as closely as possible. The limb pad angles are also very important! What draw weight and length are you trying to achieve? The total lamb stack will have more affect on draw weight than anything else without changing the design.

Like Pheonix says the tired and proven designs work or you can experiment which most times ends in disaster.     :banghead:    I heard some guys using a 8 1/2" wedge.

I wanted to be somewhere between 40 and 50 lbs at my29". It was a 40lb kit and it turned out closer to 50lbs. I noticed when I drew the bow it would stack a little close to the tip of wedge.

so will the wedge length affect the performance of the limbs? make it slower perhaps?
