How's the best way to check clear glass
« on: June 02, 2015, 07:49:00 PM »
Ordered some clear glass to build a set of new limbs with and was wondering how is the best way to check it for streaks and cloudy spots before using. Gonna be used here with a set of spliced veneers and don't want to waste my time or veneers if it happens to be bad.

Just a thought, but maybe you could wet a strip of phenolic with some water, and lay the glass on top, that might mimic the optical effect of glue between the glass and a dark wood veneer.

Maybe alcohol or isopropyl alcohol would work also ... Or maybe better. Mineral spirits etc ....

That'd be my general approach.

I've been able to spot streaks by rubbing with acetone then holding it upto a strong light source.

Thanks fellows, I figured wetting would be the best bet. Wet it and placing it on any dark surface should show any problems.

I've been checking mine when I peel the tape off after it's glued up!

Just got my order of glass. Wet each piece with denatured alcohol both sides while laying on my dark work table. I could only see a couple minor streaks in one piece and I'm not sure they will even be in the limbs once I taper the sides of the limbs. Looks like Binghams finally has good glass.

Mike from Rosewood has some of the best glass I have found.  When he says it is good glass it's good glass and haven't been disappointed
