Advice needed on a Habu Bushmaster please
« on: September 27, 2015, 10:19:00 PM »
Hey you guys. So this weekend I was given a Habu Bushmaster. I had never even heard of them before that. When I looked up the price of a new one...   :scared:  The issue with this one is it has a twisted lower limb from where the previous owner kept it under the bed. I would really love to get it fixed somehow if I don't have to spend an arm and a leg. I didn't know if it was something that really needed to be fixed or if I could still shoot it safely with the twist in the limb. I've only been shooting a couple years and still feel like I'm not experienced enough to tell the difference. Any and all advice would be appreciated!

Does anyone know of Bobby Worthington? Could this bow have been custom made for him?

Cheers

Think I responded to same thing in another thread here or on Stykbow....but should be able to remove twist with low heat and some care.  Or contact Chris Cox and see what he would do as he might be able to fix it for you to make sure it is done right.  Good luck.

I think that twist should be fixed. As Brock said, I think it can be done with low heat, but I also recommend contacting Chris cox (I assume the bowyer?).

Also could consider the bow hospital. They are a sponsor I think. And there work is supposed to be top notch.

Lastly I have corrected some mild twist in one glass bow using nothing but running hot water, and twisting the limb back by hand carefully .... It was not a valuable bow though.

Hot water only to heat the limb. I got aggressive with my heat gun on two old twisted bows and delaminated both of them, live and learn.

My selfbow mentality didn't translate to glass lam bows.

I have had friends bring me their fiberglass/wood bows with more twist than that..No heat,I simply grab it and twist limb past center, it may take a couple of times to get it back perfect. I had one I just twisted past center and left it strung up overnight..that worked too.. Habu bows are very nice! A call to Chris Cox would be good too.

Thanks for the info fellas! Out of curiosity, does the boiling water not affect the wood laminations in the limb?

I believe boiling water is way too hot.. the guys said hot water I assume that means hot "tap" water less than 140 degrees. I personally would try just twisting without heat. call Chris Cox and ask him.

Will do. Wasn't gonna go the hot water rout I was just curious. I did try your method and it did seem to help a little. I'm not gonna overdo it though until I talk to Chris.

cold twisting as suggested is the least likely to induce any extra problems. The tip can be twisted quite a ways without undue damage . Might take several attempts and then left as suggested strung for a time.

Just take your time...over correct slightly and then let sit...repeat until little by little it goes back into alignment.  I have used low heat...just enough to warm it near the twist to help initially but later I just do cold counter twisting.  At end when it is mostly straight I string bow and hang it from string on two pegs so it hangs horizontally and let the bow pull itself the rest of the way.  Sometimes have to do a little tweaking by hand but have done a few like this...not fast but not destructive either.

If unsure...I would return to Chris Cox and maybe he can put it in the press for that series of limb and apply heat while increasing pressure like a glue up...  who knows...I am sure he has a favorite way that works with his limbs.
