Author Topic: Broken tip on vintage bow need advice (Read 400 times)

Well, after anxiously waiting for an old Ben Pearson to arrive at my door step, it finally arrived yesterday morning. The bow was packed properly and arrived on time. However, upon opening the package (it took me 10 minutes to get through all the bubble wrap and tape) I saw this:

After poking around in the packaging material I finally found the broken tip:

I have NO question that the seller packaged the bow properly and I know it was fine when he shipped it (he sent me pics of him shooting the bow and all pics of him packing it up). The USPS is the culprit. Closer inspection of the box showed that it had been crushed somehow during transit. Needless to say I was a little "upset".

If the additional 5-7 lbs of draw weight wouldn't be a problem, I would cut the tips and install new limb tips. If this bow is to be a "shooter" and not a "collector" it will be fine.

Was it insured? You could probably get it shooting with one new tip (if this was the lower limb tip) two if you want them to match and probably have a better tiller. No way to tell without stringing it up and measuring. Might as well do the both with micarta and be good for FF strings.

Sporthunter - have you ever tried to get money back on the insurance with this sort of thing? I have and delivery companies are slippery'er than a bucket full of fresh eels.....I never bother insuring my bows now as I know it's a total waste of money.
Sorry to see your broken bow. Personally I would be shaping two new tips. I would measure down from the string groove 3/4 and use that as my new string position.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll rework the tips and see what happens. Sucks, but else am I going to do right? Have another old Ben Pearson coming in today. Hopefully they didn't/don't break this one either. Thanks.

Mike, haven't had to use the insurane for a claim yet. I did jump through hoops to have them replace a usps money order they lost, took some time but worked out in the end.

Yeah, I'm not going to waste my time with the PO filing a claim. Heck, they won't even answer their phone. Had a local bowyer look at it and he said there's plenty bow left to rework the tips and her shooting again...she just won't be worth anything in the eyes of a collector. Guess she'll be a "custom" bow by the time I'm done. H

H.P. you can't file a claim. The person that shipped the bow purchased the insurance. If he insured it there will be a month+ long wait but the money will be refunded to him, then he can refund it to you. Always pay the shipper an extra few buck to insure or ask him before shipping if he does it automatically.
