St. Stick is coming to town...
« on: December 23, 2015, 05:05:00 PM »
No not St. Nick, my father's Christmas present St. Stick!

How did I come up with the name? Well when my father was younger; i.e. late teens early 20s he was 6' 4" tall and 160 lbs soaking wet, so his nickname amongst friends was stick. It is also a stick-bow and it's Christmas time so St. Stick     :knothead:

Anyway, the bow is made from the sister stave from my second self-bow (#2) that I made 43# at 28", instead this one is 58# @ 30", so this makes #3!

I went with a different profile, going 2" wide from the fades out past mid limb then taper to 1/2" wide nocks.

I am going to get my nephew (who's in the photo's below) help me film the gifting of the bow tomorrow night (Christmas eve)

I added a deer antler arrow rest to it, stitched on a suede leather handle and I've got about 4 coats of tung oil on it so far, I am going to put on about 8.

And I wanted to try a little something different with the writing, instead of going with india ink, I saw at our hobby lobby a wood burner, so I put on the smallest tip for writing and went over the writing originally in pencil. I also wanted my own personal trademark, so for "Randy Jones" I went with RJ oriented with the year the way it is in the photo, I kinda like it!

So without further ado, here's the pictures!

I would be a bit hesitant about the tiller. Both limbs are bending a lot in the middle with stiff tips and stiff out of the fades too. With the width taper you have used the tiller should be elliptical.
I don't mean to be a stick in the mud but with the tiller like that it could fret or lift a splinter. You don't mention the wood but is it hickory? If it is it's unlikely to break in tension but you may find the weak spots getting worse and a 30 inch draw puts a lot of strain on the wood.

Hey mike, thanks for the input. It is Hickory, I used Eric's tillering gizmo, and it shows that the limbs are bending evenly amongst themselves, I tillered the bow for split finger with my pulley system using the limb timing method, and everything shows fine. But looking at the pictures it does show the fades are stiff still.

Hopefully she holds for a good while at least, I would be disappointed and embarrassed if she blows.

Nice work.  Bet your Dad will be happy!
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

Well things went great! Just as I expected it to. His reaction and joy made all the work worthwhile!  You can barely hear what is being said in the video due to the foreground talking/noise and I apologize for that, but you can partly hear his reactions!

This caught him off guard as he thought I had been building the bow for myself for hunting       :bigsmyl:          :archer:
