Wood for youth bow?
« on: January 20, 2016, 08:28:00 PM »
A coworker asked me to build a bow for her daughter.  This will be her first bow.  She is an up and coming hunter.  My
First youth bow.  Any idea on woods?  I was thinking a bamboo backed version for asthetic  appeal. The mother is an artist. Input appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about the wood.

I made my first bow in about 1969 - didn't make another until 2013!

2013 model - red oak board bow - came in a bit light #28 @ 28in.

I've made a few more since then, but the #28 has been what has started off my daughter and a couple of her friends with archery.

I think it's the shooting that grabs people, not what the bow's made of.

Boo backed osage. 60 inches long. Shorter bows are more difficult to tiller. You're from the Midwest so Osage should around.

Agree with Roy.
I also use IPE and Cumaru. These can sometimes be found in local hardwood stores.

If you give what specs your looking for can help with slat thickness.
If you lived close could help supply.
