Black palm ???
« on: January 28, 2016, 03:22:00 PM »
Well Ive got a game plan ready to build myself a new travel bow because I am going to Idaho for a DIY public lands elk hunt in september.  I am going to use black palm for the riser and was wondering what veneers would go good with it.  So lets see some bows with black palm please.

I'll be watching this. I have a Black Palm,  riser block I'm getting ready to use but the grain looks so coarse I'm wondering how it looks in a bow. I haven't ever seen it in a riser.

here's couple shots of one I did some time back with red Palm, very similar It had different wood in the accent and antler ramp overlays but might give you some idea.

Does take some grain filling , I used CA but think its worth the effort, certainly no worse than Wenge.

Here is one I did with ebony.  I also used thin CA glue to fill. It really soaks in and makes the palm hard as rock and easy to sand. I love the stuff.

I like the looks of that black Palm! How do you use the ca glue to fill the grain? Just wear gloves and spread it with your finger? And how many applications does it take?
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.

A question about palm, is there a preferred glue for it or will it work with epoxy, unibond or titebond3 ?

i have used Red Palm on several bows both in riser and with some also in belly lams and have only used smooth on. If using in risers be very careful at fades, as it is quite brittle and can easily break. In saying that it still makes awesome lams.

Thank you Bob exactly what I was looking for.  Its already a pretty dense wood but I will have to stabilize first.
