First try at sinew backing

How much leg and back sinew will it take for a 64 inch longbow. By-the-way this osage bow has a 2 inch hairline crack in the backside working area of one limb? Will 1 pack of 3 Rivers hide glue be enough? Where would you recommend purchasing the sinew?

I would not sinew back an osage bow 64" long unless you are pulling 30 inches or more.  Is the crack parallel with the limb or perpendicular to the limb?  If parallel just fill with super glue.  Pics would help.

Rawhide would be a better choice.

Sinew is for "strength" backing a bow, and adds significant poundage to the draw weight, as well as reflex.  Rawhide, silk, burlap, and any number of other materials are for "safety" backing a bow to prevent splinter rise, etc.

I agree with both above. If it is only a drying check, fill it with super glue. It may or may not need the rawhide backing but pics will let us know for sure.

What type glue do I use with silk or burlap?

I would not want to back an osage bow with burlap for a hairline crack.  Silk would be a better choice, personally I would go with rawhide if I was to back it.  If it is a parallel to the limb crack I would agree with rainman though.

Post a pic of the crack(check). If it is a simple check it may not need anything. It would be a shame to burden the bow with a backing if it is not needed.

Travel baseball has started here in the South. I have 3 grandsons playing. Just got in from Atlanta (2 hrs. away) watching 5 games Saturday and 2 Sunday. Anyway, I am going to find someone to help me with pictures.
Thanks for the help so far. You guys have saved me a lot of trouble and expense.
