Another Newbie Question

Hi,

As I'm thinking about what to start on next, I have a question.  On most of the longbows I've seen, the center of the riser is the center of the length of the bow.  The arrow shelf/rest is slightly above center.  Why is that preferable to having the handle lower, and the arrow rest be dead center (as opposed to a couple of inches above center)?

6 of one and half dozen of the other! It really doesn't matter as long as the bow is tillered for the set up.

It's not preferable to me. Folks generally lay bows out symmetrically(handle center is bow center) because it seems it should be easier to make and tiller that way. They also like the option of flipping the bow end for end if the tiller shifts. (I've never needed to do this).

I actually prefer neither of your two options. I like the bow's center to be about halfway between them, which balances the bow in my hand how i like and puts its center more in line with my string hand fulcrum, which helps eliminate tipping of the bow early in the draw, and the need to navigate that geometric imbalance while tillering.

I just made a bow with the arrow rest 3/8" above center and the grip 3/8" below center.
