How to get smoke smell out of wood
« on: March 05, 2017, 04:56:00 PM »
Hey guys

I've got a bow that I've been working on in my high school shop class. It's taking a bit longer than it should, but it's difficult to get a lot done with 30 other people in the class. Anyways, the other day the shop caught fire and there was a lot of smoke damage. Thankfully all of the flame was contained within the machines. Now my bow smells really strongly of woodsmoke. Any suggestions as to how I can get the smell out? When I spray on a finish, will that seal the smell in? Thanks for the help!

The finish should do it.
Don't worry about it.

I would think the finish would seal it as well. But you could also try setting the bow under some plastic with an open box of baking soda to draw some of the smell out before you finish.

Thanks guys. I'll try and get some pics up at some point. Maybe I'll resurrect my post from when I started the bow.

Sand it lightly, wipe it with alcohol or paint thinner -- the smoke particles are just on the surface.

Why worry about it?  Some people use smoke as a cover scent (like me).

I've had a lot of people suggest calling it Ol' Smokey, so that's what I'll write on it with the specs.

Finally got to start working on it again. We've been cleaning everything up for the past few weeks so I haven't made any progress on it. I'll resurrect my original build post and update it with some pictures tomorrow.
