Some spliced lams
« on: June 11, 2017, 12:32:00 PM »
Made these for something different than the regular angle splice. Working on some different designs too as I have time....

Available to buy, call me, they won't stay long!

Flat grain walnut/ curly maple
Flat grain walnut /canary (canary will stay yellow better than osage)

.040" x 2" x 36" but will make em what you want (as long as it's smaller)    :D
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Cool!

Thanks Galen! The accent " should" stay on the limb all the way to tips on the full length ones.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I am completely new to the world of epoxy but not curly maple so I am curious, can you use Aquafortis (or something similar) on the maple before glue up to darken and bring out the figure in the wood or is that going to compromise the epoxy.

Well, I glued them up in 1" thick blanks and then resawed the lams out of them. I haven't had much luck staining up to another wood so don't think you could stain after sanding the final lam.

You could probably take the AQ right up to the edge of the glue line without any problems. I used AQ on curly maple under glass and there were no glue troubles.  I used ferric nitrate crystals from The Science Company mixed with water.  No neutralizing needed.

I don't keep nitric acid on hand anymore.  It ate through the cap on the bottle and I didn't realize it until surface rust began forming on everything in the shop   :scared:     that's when I switched to the ferric nitrate.   :)

Some walnut did not react to it at all and some turned black.

You could stain them after grinding with an alcohol based stain with no glue problems. Them are fancy Kenny.
