Super glue for overlays
« on: July 28, 2017, 04:08:00 PM »
I know this question has come up before, but I saw that some of you guys use super glue for tip overlays. Have you had any failures with this? It seems a quicker less messy way of putting on tip overlays and I could hold them where I need them easier than smooth on without any slipping around.

I use gel super glue on overlays for my bamboo backed bows. No failures so far.

All the time, just started using the gorilla super glue with blue lid. I think it is even better than what I used before!

Only problem I've had with it is doing a black g10 overlay onto black glass. Never could get that glue line to go away when I did my fades! Lol

Mike, me too. But it was antler and when they came off, looked like a starved glue joint.

Blue cap Gorilla. Smooth on will give better transition I think on the glass.

x2

In the long run I think smooth-on is the best way.

I agree. EA40 gives a better blend when fading from overlay into back lam.
Superglue is quick though!

All I have ever used has been smooth on. I taper the end of the over lay first, that points inward towards the riser, to a razor edge. After the overlay has been clamped down, I wipe the excess glue off the back joint with a damp cloth soaked with denatured alcohol. Hardly any sanding is needed for a smooth transition onto the limb..

Roy I believe pre shaping to almost where you want it is the key to good blend with either glue you use.

On the last set of limbs, I used a junk limb off the same form and put plastic wrap on it and CA glued the 2 pcs of phenolic together using it as a form(could have used the bow form but this was handy).
Then ground the end and put on the limb with gorilla blue top.

Won't ever do it any other way!!

I've had no luck getting the white color of the CA to go away, I stick to smooth on..although I haven't seen failures with either. If your overlay is pre shaped and requires no further sanding CA is fine if you wipe it off. That's just what I've seen. A buddy uses kind of a chevron tip overlay and CA works fine, no sanding necessary.
