Riser Build Questions
« on: September 07, 2017, 09:35:00 PM »
I am currently researching how to build a takedown recurve riser. The General plan is 45-50# @28" 60"AMO.  I'm thinking a 17" riser.

My question(s) right now are on material choices for the riser. I'm seriously contemplating building it out of my own "micarta" materiel. I have made it in the past with old jeans and fiberglass resin and am thinking of doing something similar for the riser. I would want to add a wood accent beam and will laminate everything together.

My first question is: is the 'glass resin resilient enough to handle building a bow out of? I'm not a competitor but the bow will get shot. I hope to hunt it as well.

Second question: What epoxy would I use to laminate everything together? Will the "normal" epoxys used in riser construction work with the homegrown micarta?

Thanks in advance for any help.

For your first build why not use a proven material to give yourself the best chance for success?    Of course I am a conservative natured person.  LOL

I guess because I've never been one to follow the crowd in that regard.

Do you have any advice regarding the epoxies?

Fiber glass resin, glued to fiberglass and wood.
If you were going to follow the crowd, EA-40 would work.

my 2 cents

EA - 40 is made to flex in a limb, not sure how it would be in a full riser made of it. You don't want your riser to flex. Maybe use a harder epoxy? Just thinkin out loud....
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Read again Kenny
Take down, micarta and wood Riser, smooth-on for gluing the micarta and wood riser together, and limbs.

What you talking about doing would be plenty strong. Just be sure your resin is mixed well and the jeans or whatever is saturated well and clamped tight to cure. Gonna be a lot of resin and material to do a riser.

Cool.  Thanks y'all.

As for the amount of material, I figure that the denim is most likely free to seriously cheap.  The resin will probably come from the "depot" and isn't too pricey.  So it'll all work out.  I have some left over from a knife I built and man is it hard.

Should be kinda fun.
