Tell me about your Edge Sander
« on: December 08, 2017, 12:41:00 PM »
I'm hoping to get as much response to this as possible.....please tell me about your edge sander....What brands do you have/have had? How long have you been using it?  What do you think overall?  What would you change about it or wish it did for a function?  Build quality,  customer service....tell me everything so I can make the best purchase.  I plan on using it ALOT.  Primarily for building bows.  I wont be making much furniture lol!       :help:

I went for many years and many bows without one, and then found a good deal on Craigslist. I got a Jet EHVS-80CS, like new for about half the price of a new one. It's a basic model as far as edge sanders go. It does NOT oscillate, but I don't miss that function. It's sturdy, the table is cast iron, and belts change quickly and track well. I run very aggressive paper on it, 40 grit I think? and it removes wood fast. I use the drum function of it quite a bit too and haven't used the drum sander in my drill press for a long time. I use the edge sander often now on all types of bows and other projects and should have gotten one years ago.

The only downside is, it makes a LOT of dust... so my next purchase was a dust collection system :^)

Roy,  I was looking at that...... you ever have issues with that wood table?  Warping?  Some complaints about that in reviews........

I bought a used Grizzly G1140 6x80 edge sander around 5 years ago..it was advertised as a GO512 (like Roys) but when I drove the 100 miles to look at it it was a G1140, which was my 2nd choice of Sanders.. It ran and looked good, I got it for a very good price. One of my friends helped me build a Profile sander on the motor end. So far it has been a great sander for me. I had to replace the switch One time, I ordered 2 from Grizzly and they were cheap and quickly shipped. I ordered an extra drive drum when we built the profile sander...only $40...in case we messed up machining the 4 inch center flat..we didn't.

If you got the room and the bucks, I say go for it...
I have a 6"x 48" belt sander and just put it on it's side... I even have a stone counter top set up at 90 degrees to the platen for the table... Works Great...

I have a Ryobi 1056 (small, hand held belt sander). I build a mounting station with a table and I use it as an edge sander. Work great.

Yeah Roy it will be ok.  Had to replace the motor recently after 9-10 years. I set the wiring up for 110 V for the first one. do know if that had any impact on it or not. I went ahead an ran a 220V line to the new motor. This one is set up with a profiler on the drum end.
