Core thickness question?
« on: March 12, 2018, 12:54:00 PM »
Well Guys I have a 70 inch piece of lemon wood that is 1.5 wide and tapered from 7/16 at center to 5/16 at the tips. I have boo backing strips and ipe belly lams 1/4 and 1/8th inch thick.
Question is what can I do with this? Can I glue it up with a 1/4 or 1/8th ipe belly like it is or do I need to taper the lemon down some more? Problem with tapering the lemon is id have to do it by hand and I doubt I could get it perfect. Weight doesn't matter 45-60 will work.

I get precise when I'm making tri lams.  Fractions don't cut it for me, sorry Roy.
I use .190" with a .002"/inch taper for all of my cores to keep it constant, and I adjust my belly lam when trying to hit different weights.
Not sure how much I can help if you don't have an accurate way to taper your cores.  It's just not the way I do it.
If I had the wood you do, I would do the following:  bamboo - .125" tapered approximately 0.002/inch
Lemon core- .190" tapered 0.002"
Ipe core- .25" tapered 0.002"
That would get you close to 50-55 lbs depending on bow length, width, riser length, etc. etc.
Other's may have better options for you.

Thanks BMorv, I can work with that. Got some calipers that will measure it some where.

And keep in mind I don't know how lemon wood will work as a core, but I bet it will do fine.  Some may consider it a waste though, as it's apparently a decent and hard to come by belly wood.

Yep, that's why I want to use it as a belly. Maybe a nice power lam as mentioned elsewhere.
