Vermin control, whistle pig down!!!
« on: June 24, 2010, 07:40:00 PM »
I was asked to try and remove this very smart woodchuck with minimal disturbance. I guess you can imagine the smile on my face knowing how quiet trad gear is.  :bigsmyl:

Sounds funny, but I used Sure Scent to lure the beast from it's hole. It's head popped up and she scurried over to the Sure Scent facing away from me.

I poked around some cover and drew back. She saw me and went helter skelter towards the hole. Keeping focus on the smallest spot, I nailed her perfect with a Bear Razorhead on a dead run!!!!

My set-up is a St. Joe River longbow 53@28, Carbon Express 250 w/ 125 grain brass insert and 145 grain Razorheads.

BTW this is my first ground grizzly!

I've never heard of sure scent to lure them from the whole.  Interesting tactic. How long did you wait before she came out for the bait?  BTW - nice shooting!

It took about 1 hr for her to pop out. The Sure Scent was upwind from the hole and I was downwind. Once she popped her head up, she immediately went towards the scented area.

I was surprised too but now I have an extra tool in the arsenal.         It works for squirrels wonderfully, which is why  I tried it for woodchucks. I figured this out while deer hunting and had tree rats running around all over the place.

I've been looking at the list of critters Michigan has open year round. Think I'll go for the varmint slam this summer!!!   :goldtooth:

• Species with Year-round Hunting Seasons
No closed hunting season for opossum, porcupine, red squirrel, skunk, thirteen-lined ground squirrel, weasel, woodchuck, English (house) sparrow, European starling, and feral pigeon

Have to add feral hogs and all the bowfishing species.

Congratulations, that was a heck of a shot. I think you should get a full body mount.
