Gold Tip Carbon Shaft Opinions, Help
« on: March 12, 2008, 11:51:00 AM »
I'm looking to get some carbon arrows that I can try some extreme FOC with. I have 0 experience with carbons.

The two main bows that I shoot are as follow:

My draw length is 29#'s. My arrows are 30".

It may sound weird, but I have a 55#@29" Bob Lee that insists on a 2117 (.407 deflection).

I also have a GP that is 63#at29" that shoots 2018's (.464 deflection).

I shoot both with 125-145 grains up front.

I'd like to get about 300 grains up front on the carbons. Of course this could be flexible.

What sized Gold Tips should I get?
3555 at .5" deflection or
5575 at .4" deflection or
7595 at .314" deflection

Obvious answer to me would be 5575, but I'd like to hear from people with more experience.

My results from spining GT shafts are:
3555 - 58#
5575 - 70#
7595 - 82#

I get 5575's to fly well out of my 51#@29" Kota with 30" bop arrows with 250 grain points and aluminum inserts (25 grains?).  I use 3 parabolic feathers and a 12 strand fast flight string (2 strands extra under the serving).

2018's with 125 grain points also fly well out of this bow.

My bow loves 2117's as well, just switched to 5575 GT's and they fly perfectly.  58lb chekmate H2 with 30 1/4" arrows.

I have two bows, a widow 51@28 and a swan 55@28 and I shoot gold tip 5575's. My arrows are 29.5 inches long, and I use a 100 grain brass insert up front. I use 200 grain tips. My broadheads are any 125 with a 75 grain steel insert. The 300 grains up front gives roughly 22% FOC which results in a very hard hitting arrow that flies beautifully out of my bows. Even in high wind the tail might kick out a little, but that 300 grains keeps it going right to the spot.

I dont know if this setup will work for you, but it sure works great for me. What you could do is front load the tips and use a full length arrow. Cut it gradually from the rear, replacing the nock each time, till it flies perfectly from your bow. Then fletch it. There you go. Or you could start with the length you want and then fool around with the tip weight till you get it right and teh arrows fly great.

I know it sounds crazy, but my 50# @ 28" Turkey Creek likes 3555s left full length (30") with 300 grains up front. I'm drawing to 28 3/4". I tried the 5575s, but they showed slightly stiff even left full length.

I'm shooting about 50# at 29.  To get high FOC I have 5575 with full length with 250 or 300 at 31".  This is a homemade hyrid RD longbow with riser cut just to center.  You may need to go heavier, but you might get away  with 30" at 250 or maybe 300.

I shoot a 5575 30" with 200gr tip and 20gr weight insert into the insert, and 50gr on the rear with nock adaptor.  600gr total.  This is out of my 60# zipper.

What was cool about these arrows was the ease of tuning.  If I want more wieght, I just add equal weight to front and back.

Bad thing, is my wieghts are coming loose on occasaion.

I shoot 75/95 GT's out of my three recurves that pull 58-65# @ my 29" draw length.  I use 250 gr field tips when practicing, and 125 gr steel inserts and 125 gr Wensel Woodsman broadheads mounted for hunting.  This setup works well for me.

Cooch, I have considered that.  But scared I might not be able to remove later if I want with that long allen wrench.
