Georgia Swamps and chasing pigs
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:01:00 AM »
Well  went on my first outing this past Sunday here in Georgia. Met up with Apex Preditor(Marty Thompson) at his house. Not a finer man around. Made me feel real welcome. We shot for a while at his place to loosen up and then headed to the swamps with a couple of his friends.

It was a fine day to be out with plenty of sunshine. We parked the truck and hicked in a good bit. Marty showed me where to head into the bush on a ridge and he went further up the trail. We split up, each wishing the other luck.

I slipped into preditor mode and began working my way down a trail trying to keep the wind in my face and letting my eyes search the surroundings as I move at a snails pace.

I reached the end of the trail at the edge of the swamp water and lo and behold spotted a small sounder. They were headed my way so I ducked behind some palmetto bushes and readied myself. Then the wind swirled hitting the back of my neck and one of them woofed and they were gone. Man, just 10 more yards and I would of had a chance.

The wind would prove to be my undoing the rest of the evening. I would have it in my face or it would be still then it would swirl blowing another stalk on another sounder.

No game taken this time but I had a blast. Saw gators, otter, hawks, owls and a couple of deer along with the two sounders of pigs.

Marty and I will be doing this again and hopefully the wind will be on our side the next time.

Danny and I had a blast, even though we didn't bring one home.  That wind can ruin a good stalk in a heart beat.  I had no less than four good stalks ruined the same afternoon.  I regret not taking any photos this hunt.  Danny and I plan to hit it again as soon as turkey season comes in on the 22nd.  There is definitely a GA pig in Danny's future.  I can hardly wait to try them again!

Cool mate, glad someone is getting out doing what we love. Did your arrows turn up before you left mate?

Somehow the ground seems friendlier, knowing that you are walking it too, Danny. Good to have you home.
