Uh-Oh... I Finished Bow w/ Interior Polyurethane
« on: March 14, 2008, 09:13:00 AM »
Messed this one up I think!  I finished my new hickory self-bow with spray-on polyurethane and got it looking "ok".  I just read, however, that it's for interior use.  Should I sand this out, restain, and refinish with something else like Tru-Oil?
I feel like all I'm doing is asking questions at this point... maybe someday I'll be able to answer a few!!!
Thank you for the help,
Alek

I use poly that says it's for indoor use.  It is fine.  Unless you leave your bow outside all the time  :)

I've also used it on a bunch of bows without any problem. Bill G.

You might just rough it up a bit (120 grit) and apply spar or another exterior polyeurethane.  Another technique would be to wax it with a good furniture wax.  The main thing about the finish is to maintain the moisture content of the bow (too dry it will break, too wet it won't perform).  I don't think you're as far gone as you think.  Congrats on the bow and welcome to the bowyers club!

I've been told the major difference between interior and exterior, is the later provides UV protection. Not a problem, unless you're going to leave it outdoors.

All of my cedar arrows were finished with acrylic poly. Never had any problems and they take more abuse than the bow.    Pat

It should be fine but I would make sure to wipe it clean after each use with a dry towel and then a little wax will help.Interior will water spot.Like the top of the coffee table....bowdoc

I've used it on bows and arrows, no problems so far-but I don't leave them outside.
