sitka spruce what do you think, foc overall weight
« on: March 17, 2008, 02:55:00 PM »
i orderd some 80-85 sitka spruce, i shoot a 58 at 28 super shrew samurai, i draw 29.5 i scaled it at 60 plus some change,  i probably will have to keep them full lenght, im looking to have some where from 160 to really heavy up front,
just wondering what grain you all think might be in the balpark up front,  and what kind of overall weight i might have, looking for about 600, thats what i shoot with carbons.

For any given spine, grain weight will vary, and most suppliers will have their shafts bundled in different physical weights within specific spine weights.  You should be able to specify the grain weight you want within reason.  Just a matter of working backward from your point weight.  If you want a 600 grains completed arrow, you'll probably want ras shafts in the 400-410 grain range.  Finish (20 grains), feathers (15 grains) and nock (5 grains) will add 40 grains or so.  The point taper will take off 5-8 grains.  Add the point and you're around 600 grains.

im pretty shure the raw shafts are midhigh 300s he said he would send me one of the heavyest sets he had at that spine, im hoping that i will be grossly over spined so i can load it up on the tip.

i chose to go with the spruce so the shaft wouldnt weigh much and i could make up most of the overall weight in the front

Just made up some sitkas I bought from Hildebrand. Shafts are 70-75# spine and weigh 410 grs. Finished arrows with 3-5 1/2" sheilds,cap,crest,125 gr. point,4 coats of poly cut to 31" weigh 560 grs.

Right on JSC.  And another 35 grains in the head, as Jr is proposing, would make them almost 600 grains -- 595 to be exact.

JR: 410 is probably on the heavy side for Sitka spruce, but not rare.  If your shafts come in lighter, can go to a heavier head yet, something like a 190 grizzly, to stay in that 600 range.

My sitka's are cut at 28 1/2". With a 125 head they consistently weight out at 540-550 grains.

I just received a dozen from Hiderbrand, 78# cut and finished to 28 1/2", 205gr up front, tapered, that weigh 645gr. I asked for heavies and that's what I got. Spruce is my favorite arrow wood and I have a dozen shafts I'm going to have footed with osage soon.
