Cheap Hanging Feeder plans
« on: March 18, 2008, 03:11:00 PM »
i got a HD gift card for $100. I also have a big Simmon tree 100 yards behind our backporch at the hunting camp that needs a corn feeder so me and my little men can watch deer and turkey eat this spring and summer.. Any ideas how I can make one from Home Depot stuff?

Hey Joe,
I know a couple of good feeders that can be made from HD stuff.

A section of 6" pvc about 4 feet long can be tied vetically to the tree. Position the bottom end about 3 inches above the ground and fill the tube to the top with corn. As you fill it a pile will spill out on the ground but soon will build up enough to stop more corn from spilling out. Then as the deer eat away at the pile more will spill out and keep them coming back. You will only need to fill it once a week or so unless you have very hungry deer.

Joe, I use a 4' pvc, but I put a "Y" on the bottom and cap the bottom of the "Y" This saves on wasted corn. Drill a couple holes in the cap on the bottom so any rain that gets in through the "Y" will drain out. I have use these for years and they work great.

I prefer a 5 gal bucket with lid. (so feed stays dry)  cut a whole a little smaller than soda can size and drop a toilet plunger (handle first) down thru the hole.  the rubber plunger acts as a stop.  fill with feed, and spill a little on the ground underneath.  as they feed they hit the handle of the plunger releasing corn/feed as it lifts up.  they get accustomed to it and hit the handle when then want feed.

(though I prefer a broadcast feeder (I gave up the plunger feeder and bought a screw on feeder attachment)... as clustering deer closely together  for feeding is thought to contribute to the spread of CWD...)

Here's one I made from some PVC left over from when they built my house. It is the stuff they use for underground cable/wiring.

Here it is in action. It hold just under a 50# bag of whole corn.

ive used the pvc feeders and they work good.

I went to a 30gallon industrial garbage can (found at HD) w/ a lit.  I screwed a piece of 2x4 inside as a support in between the handles and strung it up by the handles.  Simply attached a close line pulley to a branch and hoisted it right up.  I cut a circular hole in the bottom 1/4-1/2 inch larger then the dowel you plan to use.

Take a wooden dowel (broom handle etc) drill a hole in the end about 1 inch off from the tip and put a screw through it to form like a T handle or a cross.  Place the dowel in the garbage can and the screw acts as a pivot point.

I added some extras as well...I lined the bottom of the garbage can with some sheet metal to keep the critters from chewing through it and riveted it down.

Then just fill with corn, cover the dowel in peanut butter and hoist it up leaving the dowel nose height of a deer.

All they will learn when they want food they will hit the dowel and the corn will fall out.  really simple and yous hould be able to make anywhere from 2-4 of these with the gift cert.

thats a little private piece my buddy allows me to hunt up in zone 2 but he doesn't allow guests...its not to shabby for early bow season but late season them bucks move on deep into other private xmas tree farms and state land and dont frequent the property.

Only saw a 6pt and that forky that year I hunted and i hunted it alot in 06 chasing that 8pt.

I passed on both waiting for the 8pt but it never happened.  heres a pic of the 6pt which should be a nice deer this coming season.

I built a 4X8 plywood platform about a foot off the ground. Then place a 30 gallon plastic garbage can in the center mounted with screws. A piece of plywood on the inside adds strength. Cut a couple of 2" wholes and the corn will spill out and stay dry.
