First set of wood arrows
« on: May 14, 2018, 10:57:16 PM »
I got these Shurewood Shafts in a trade this past winter.  I wanted to make some arrows for the Marshall, Michigan primitive shoot next week.  I shot them bare shaft and kept trimming them down until I found a length that had them flying straight.  I tried mixing up some grey dye but it ended up turning the shafts a nice brown color.  I figured I would try my hand at cresting.  I don't think I had the right kind of paint.  It didn't cover very well.  I had to put it on thick.  I spliced the fletching, also a first.  It turned out OK.  Overall I think they turned out decent.  I can make some improvements on the next set.  I hope I don't lose any of them in the skunk cabbage swamps at Marshall.

Nice going Clint. Building arrows is addictive. There are always new stain, feather, paint, cresting combos that come to mind and it’s hard not to try them all. Just need to make sure your all your components are compatible. I have recently switched out to True North Arrow clear coats and paints and have been really pleased with the results.

Nice work.  And especially for a first set.

Your fletching jig adjustment is a bit off.  Notice how the leading tips of the fletch slightly curve in the opposite direction of the rest of the fletch.  Not a big issue.  I have done the same thing and whatever the effect may have been, I didn't notice it.

I used a RW helical clamp.  I'll check out the alignment on the next batch.

Splicing is very impressive. I've lost count how many dozens of arrows I've built, but I've never spliced. Intimidating.

The splicing wasn't to hard to figure out.  I used some cheap pre-cut fletching that I got on ebay.  It would be easier if I was using full feathers and then burning them to shape.

I bought a handful of paint markers to try on the next set of arrows.  I wasn't happy with the paint that I used on these.  I'll post my second attempt and see if it's any better.

For a first try, they look great! I made several sets before I tried cresting, but I still haven't attempted splicing yet. It seems you have the talent to do really nice work. Congratulations!

I tried splicing once and it didn't look near as good as yours.

Looking great!! Nothing like building your own wooden arrows and then harvesting a animal with those very arrows.
