Got me thinking
« on: May 31, 2018, 10:38:35 AM »
The thread about confidence building archery got me thinking about the youth behind us and our future.
Today divorce is at an all time high, many fathers are non existent or just too busy. Lots of boys and girls (don’t forget the girls) would shoot/hunt if someone invited them to try.
Imagine the joy in a child’s face the first time they pick up a bow, it gets even better when the hit their target.
Imagine the look on their face when they take a picture proudly holding a hunter ed certificate.
Imagine their hands shaking the first time a doe, turkey or even a carp comes near.
Imagine the exhilaration when they succeed.
Guys I mentor many kids and have been involved in many fronts, from bird dogs, hounds, turkeys, deer, etc.
I help disabled vets, women, etc.
Believe me the teaching, mentoring will give so much more back than what you put into it.
I know myself, each time a class is over or nearing an end I have mixed feelings. At one point I am so proud of them, the other part is gonna miss their smiling faces and bubbly personality.
Funny cause almost without a doubt the kids say I might be more excited than them while prepping a turkey or deer for first time pics.
It never gets old boys. Another thing to consider. A local bow shop owner once told me every boy is drawn to 3 things. Fire, knives, bows.
If we allow them a chance they could be on our side, the option is not good.
To the old hands, does it really matter if we kill one more or less deer this year or is a newbys first that much more important.
I’d bet most if not all can remember a first shot, first deer and who was with you.
Touch someone’s life, be a mentor. .
