Hackberry bendy, 40#at 26”
« on: June 28, 2018, 12:08:51 PM »
Here’s a little tight grained hackberry bendy handle I finished up recently. It’s 53” n2n, 1 3/8” to the outside of the scallops and 1 1/4” to the inside, tapering to 3/8” single side nocks with cow horn overlays. I built up the handle with a couple layers of cork sheet then wrapped it with elephant leather. It feels very light in the hand, weighing 13oz with the string and handle wrap. I heated in 1” reflex when heat treating. After letting it rest it holds a fairly straight profile, after shooting it has about 1” temporary set.
I plan on putting this bow in the auction at mojam if anyone is interested.

Thanks for looking,
Kyle

Fun!  Love the simple stuff!  Did you steam in some reflex?  Or is hackberry less prone to taking set?

I just used dry heat on a form to bend in an even reflex starting out of the handle I put in about 1” to start with and even up the profile. Here’s a picture of where it started. I’m not sure how hackberry typically is about taking set, since this was my first go with it. I will say that it is an enjoyable wood to work with. But it did seem to take a bit more set than I get with Osage or black locust. But nothing that’s comcerning to me .
