Did a little painting on my Warthog skull today. Wanted it to look African tribal.

Nice, really nice.  Can't help wondering if the Warthog and Croc are related.

A long time Adirondack hunter, Jim Masset would decorate his skull mounts with primitive art work and the write a small tale on the forehead of the skull. Where it was shot, what the weather was, how far he tracked the buck and what the animal scored. He had a very impressive collection of deer he had killed, most over 140". It is a neat thing to do........

Ron, I did the same thing on this skull. I wrote the details on the back side of the skull.

Looks good - gives me some ideas.  I am leaving in just over a week for Namibia.  Mostly packed, but still shooting both bows I am taking.  Put one in each luggage with a dozen arrows in each as well.  Any tips for Johannsburg airport?  I have heard some bad stories about having to pay a bribe to get bow.  Going to try and get luggage booked through to Windhoek Nam. and not clear customs in Jburg.  Fellow told me two weeks ago - he just got back and had to pay $300 bribe to get his compound bow back.  Maybe my wood recurves will not attract attentions of customs in Jburg.

I've heard all those stories but found that airport to be very user friendly. You don't want to let anyone touch your bags, just keep it all with you.

I traveled with a longbow tube and the guy with me as well. Our luggage came but the bow cases being long didn't come. I asked a guy working there where our bow cases would be, he asked if we had all our bags. I told him that we had one more to come yet. He asked what the bow cases looked like and I told him two long green tubes. He told me to wait on the last bag and when it came around to give him a high five signal and he would bring them to us and that he would be keeping an eye on us. I thought sure he's going to keep an eye on us in that huge airport. Well once the last bag came around I began to look around for the guy and saw him across the way and waved to him all was good. Sure enough, here he came with two green longbow cases and wished us good luck on our trip and thanked us for coming. Never asked or hinted for money.

The airport also had announcements playing all the time about not letting anyone touch your bags or offer to carry them unless they were wearing the official reflective vests and jackets that the employees ware. We also found all the ones working there to be very friendly and helpful. South Africa knows that they need and depend on hunters.

Just be careful and pay attention and you will be fine! Don't worry about it and have a ball, its just part of the adventure and embrace it!

Thanks Mike for the resurrance.  We will keep a hand on our bags at all times.  We have about 12 hrs layover in Jburg before the flight to Windhoek.  A long time to lay around, but we will make it.

That is very cool and unique. I like the idea of writing dates on the skulls.  May have to do that myself.

I like it!  I'm not much of a wall mount kind of guy...it was part of the mutual agreement the missus and I arrived at about 42 yrs ago.  "Don't hang them on the wall" and hunt 'em all you like.  It was a win-win considering where I hunt is basically totally devoid of genetics and agriculture, so big racks are non-existent and I just fill the freezer.  I do enjoy painting the skulls with Native American designs just to honor the animal and hanging those in the deer shack!  There's a guy at the local flea market who spray paints auto vanity plates who's done nice work on some more elaborate scenes for me for a very reasonable price...I think he's decided it's good business to humor folks who're always totin' around dead critter skulls, lol!
