Selfbow Mushroom Hunt

Birch bolete

One of my favorite evening adventures this time of year is to walk the thousands of acres of public land here in south central Alaska and look for spruce hens with my bow.  I recently met a guy through work who is really up on his mushroom knowledge and he has shown me an entirely new food group available here. There are so many to choose from.  So now stump shooting has turned to "Mushroom Hunting". I'm on a selfbow kick lately and this vinemaple called lumpy is shooting very well!

I’ve always wanted to gather my own mushrooms, but never had the confidence to do it myself.  It’s nice that you have someone to guide you.

Tajue,

I am in Anchor Point (south western Kenai Peninsula) I have seen a few black bears and a couple grizzlies this season. No real problems so far. Sometimes I carry pistol but I much prefer a short barreled pistol grip 12 gauge with 1.75 ounce slugs On a shoulder sling. I with the quiver pictured I sling the shotgun over my back the via the opposite shoulder and this gives me plenty of room to shoot arrows and stay mobile. I have not had to use it. Hopefully never will.
