split vs 3 under
« on: May 13, 2018, 05:32:37 PM »
I have a new Fox Triple Crown.  Tiller 1/8 positive.  I wanted to shoot split but am proficient 3under also.  Brace 7 3/4, nock 17/32.  3 under 60-65 / 125 point or CE 150 w 145 point, paper tune bullet holes (5-6').  Drawing 30" with 31" arrow.  Split finger always bounces off shelf no matter where I set nock point.  I am used to split being about an 1/8 lower than three under.  I feel like my release with split is very good, but apparently not.  Any Ideas what my problem might be?  Is this a bow that just wants to be shot 3 under?

I had a similar problem in reverse where I couldn't get a bow I shoot 3 under to tune for nock point.  After trying many different things, I tried raising the rest by using a feather rest, and that worked.  Someone said it might have been the cushioning of the feather rest that worked rather than the increased rest height.  Could be.  Several people said raising the brace height had worked for them in similar situations.  That was going to be the next thing on my list.  I note that you are more or less in the middle of the recommended brace height range, so you should have a little to play with.

I also had this problem in reverse. Switched from split to 3 under. Arrows kept bouncing off shelf. So I started raising knock point till the problem went away. To my surprise when I got to almost 1 inch high it all came together. 15/16 is where it stopped now shots great.

Are you getting even pressure on all 3 fingers?

Could your draw arm elbow be too high or too low?

1/8th tiller is getting close to a bow tillered for 3 under.

Something to try---when shooting split take all pressure off your index finger and let it rest along the nock of the arrow.  This is a technique that Dan Toelke showed me and it really does clean up your release.  It may keep the shaft from bouncing off the shelf in your case.  Good luck with this.

Dan is a great guy! I tried out his 2 under for a while last year.  I liked it.  I plan on using it this year as well.

When i inquire about bows forsale and ask what the bow was tillered for  so many owners tell me it doesnt matter and the bowyer tillers his bows the same to shoot either way and i chuckle to myself yeah that just meant he didnt have a 2nd set of forms so he is telling everyone that, i avoid bows by that perticular bowyer from that point on if they do not have two sets of forms for each limb design its time to think about it.   I know Ron Fox has both forms for each bow,,,,, and nice choice on the triple crown its one of the best right now.

I am a little late chiming in but did you try double nock points and how tight are you nock fitting on the string?

Huh, never heard of a bowyer having different forms for split and three under. Always thought the difference was pretty minor. Been tuning bows for a lot of years and all it took was 1/8" or so change in nock point. Maybe I missed something.

The HHB selfbow I'm hunting this year does not mind to be shot either way. 0-25yds I shoot gloved 3-under, 26-30yds shoot split. That's with cedar and a 200grn 2 Blade up front. Bow is tiller about even with a shelf.

Might try some different setup arrows?
