Broadhead thoughts...
«

I wanted to get some opinions from the experts.
I have my 17 y/o daughter shooting 125gn VPA 3-Blade (1-1/8") heads. She is shooting a 39lb Elkheart with 410gn total weight arrows at right around 165fps. I have been wondering if I should have in a 2-Blade head instead?? Thoughts for whitetails??
Thank you,
Mark

I'm sure someone will chime in and tell a story of someone's neighbor's daughter killing a 400 pound deer with a 2 inch snuffer shooting 24 pounds of draw weight, but I would vote for a sharp cut on contact 2 blade.

I'm far from an expert, but I set both of my daughters up with 125 grain muzzy phantoms, they give you the option of cut on contact in a 4 blade or you can take the bleeder blades out and make them 2 blades, and it drops them down to 100 grains. No kills for them as of yet so I have no real evidence on how they preform on a whitetail, but they tuned and fly very well out of their bows.

I would recommend NOT changing anything now - since there is nothing wrong with the set up - it is hunting season this is not the time to make any unnecessary changes. Assuming she shoots this set up well already and has shot in the broadheads.

If it's tuned and the heads are sharp I see no problem.

If the shafts are flying well, not a problem. Having said that, I would add that increasing the FOC in the future will insure good penetration. I am currently shooting both a 41# Elkheart with an FOC of 26% and a 40# ACS with the same. Shafts are heavy at about 575g, and a bit slow but oh my do they do some damage!

FYI - I am shooting 200gn VPA 3-Blade heads out of my 50lb Javaman Falcon XL.

Sounds very similar to my wifes setup.
415grain arrow
150grains of that being a wensel woodsman broadhead
She just blew through a doe like a hot knife through butter on Sunday evening.
I still believe when all is said and done, the 3bladed pyramid broadhead will out penetrate a two-blade through the hide.

Huntryx, for a couple of years I shot practically the same setup as yours, with MA3 heads. I killed two or three deer with it, excellent penetration. I do think a heavier arrow helps.
I would definitely go with a cut on contact head, whether 2 or 3 blade, especially with arrows under 500 grains.
