Taper ?
« on: June 20, 2017, 04:49:00 PM »
I'm almost embarrassed by these questions, but nothing ventured, nothing gained....

First I'm assuming that the measurement for the taper is how much per running inch.

But I'm wondering is the taper just one sided? So that the lamination if looked at closely would resemble a long ramp when viewed from the side - taper runs along the top and the bottom remains flat is what I'm imagining.

If the taper is like I think it is; then which side goes where - does the taper face the belly or back of the bow?

BTW, everyone on here is an artist to one degree or another. All the work I see is stunning. I almost drool over the bows I see being crafted here.

Thanks!

I grind both sides so it is probably taken off pretty equally from each side. I'm not sure you could tell anyway, and it would make no difference in how it goes in the bow.  :)

I'm so glad I asked. I think I figured because of the way I saw the lamination sleds being used that only one side was being sanded on a slope.

So I guess this means when setting up a sled for the grind, that you set it to half the amount of total taper you need. Then flip it over side to side - not end for end and run it through again? Or heck maybe I'm over complicating this. I still haven't built my first bow yet, but I'm gettin' close   :)

I've thought about this as well. But than realized that the slope is only in relation to the butt end of the lam. Once you grind the ends of the lams for a scarf joint, the whole concept is thrown right out the window.

No, when grinding tapers, I have a 2" sled that I run thru the bandsaw against the fence with the workpiece at the blade, so I cut a taper on it to start with. Saves grinding and grain matches better than starting parallel and grinding the taper on it.

So less passes thru sander.

Nope
.001 is .001
.002 is .002 ect.
when you flip it it's the same.

If you was building a ramp then you want all your taper on one side. But in the bow it aint gonna matter.

Hilarious!.I grind from both sides as well helps tidy up any slight differences there might be from side to side. Also for ASL and deflex/reflex my rear lams are one piece and I grind to to the center from each side, so taper actually starts under riser. my riser templates etc, are shaped to suit.Mostly saves doing scarf joints.

Try this for S&Gs. Grind one side flat. then turn the lam over and grind your taper all the way out. Now close you eyes and flip the lam over several times real fast
. now lay it on the table ------------witch side is tapered----------- :dunno:
