Truck rack for hunting trip - pictures
« on: September 23, 2018, 10:16:26 AM »
I thought some hunters might like to see this rack. I had a lot of people ask about it.
We pieced this truck rack together from some components ordered online. It's from two different manufacturers. The cargo basket is actually a roof rack for something like a Land Rover.
It worked well, hauled a lot of weight. We put the coolers and meat up there and made a lot more room so loading and unloading hunting gear was easy. We had the all the gear for 5 hunters to go from PA to WY and back. (1 traditional gear and 4 with compound gear).
The system allows use of a roll-up cover and access to the bed. Assembly was pretty easy. Cost wasn't too bad. I'm sure there are lot of improvements and modifications that could be made. I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for already manufactured but after using this I'm surprised it's not commercially available as a ready to go bolt on rack.
Note - fastening the runners to the bed rail of a new model F250 is a little tricky. The bed is all aluminum. I used aircraft rivet-nuts.

Wow, nice job. I had though about the same setup as yours for my Tacoma for a trip this year to Colorado, but ran out of time. Looks like it worked out well. What was your final costs and would you do anything different?

Cool set-up.  Checkout some of the overland expedition websites to get ideas on truck racks they’re very popular with the folks that do that stuff. Nuthouse industries is another good site. For me it’s hard to beat a good truck cap to maximize storage and keep it secure. I was considering some type of rack on my next truck but my only concern is it makes your gear more inviting to thieves versus a lockable cap.

I had about $600 wrapped up in it. One person who liked it, spent some time looking at it and then said, "I'll take my truck down to the marina and have them custom make one". That sounded like the best idea except he would probably have a few thousand in it!
