We got to make a trip up to our family friend's place near Junction, Tx this past weekend. The animals were moving. On the first night, I shot a doe and two bearded hens. I had to pack them out because the roads were too wet. Actually, the ranger probably could have made short work of it but it's more fun to do things the hard way. My dad shot a big sow back in front of the hams, and my brother showed up late and just still hunted the creek where he arrowed two pigs. Both of them were quartered on and likely appeared to be single lung/gut hits. I got on my dad's blood trail (he's color blind) just for a few yards to get a heading on his pig and then we backed out. My brother immediately backed out on his.
The next morning, I shot a big boar at my stand, my dad shot a doe, my brother shot a little boar, and my brother in law shot a little boar as well. I had to pack my boar out, again, relatively unnecessarily. After that, I met up with my dad to start looking for his pig from the night before. I picked up a little more blood but the previous night's rain had pretty much washed it all away. The ranch owner has a lab that can pick up a trail pretty good and she was over with the group trying to find my brother's two pigs from the night before. My dad and I went over there and right when we showed up we heard them yelling in excitement as they had just found the first pig my brother shot the night before. We went over to them and as we were looking at this boar, my brother in law came up out of the creek saying "I found another pig, and its about twice as big as that one!" We knew immediately that it had to be my dad's pig. We went over there to look at it, and sure enough, a huge sow with a hole in front of her hips was laying dead. It was at least 400 yards from where my dad shot it and there was no chance we would have found it if it wasn't for that stroke of luck. Shortly there after we went and found my brother's second pig from the night before.
My brother shot a doe on the last evening hunt to top it off. The final take came out to 3 does, 6 pigs, and two turkeys. Our cups (and freezers) are quite full. Praise God for his blessings. It sure was fun.
