Pulling Moose out of Lake
« on: November 12, 2018, 12:59:28 PM »
Here is a short video of me and a few friends pulling a moose that had died in the lake. We where on a Fly-in moose hunt so weight can add up very fast.
After reading about old timers in the Yukon pulling moose out of the water by them selves I was curious. I studied the process as best I could and all they had was a rope they took along. I practiced at home pulling my Quad around the lawn which is close to 1000 lbs. Well I know a wet moose weighs in at a lot more and the next time my lever will be longer. Every situation is different and there are different ways of setting it up but the process is the same a log acts as your pulley and another log acts as the lever to turn the log. Static rope is the only way I would go with because of the lack of stretch . It will still stretch some but much less the a nylon rope for example. Here is the big advantage you don't double or quadruple the rope. So now you can pull something almost the full length of the rope all you loose is the tie of at the pulley and in this case the antler of the moose. The trees in the video were very small (an old burn) so we braced them for better support. One needs to adapt to the situation at hand.

I remember a Tradganger having trouble processing an elk years ago. The elk had died in a blow-down if I remember right. It was tangled up and there was no way he could move it by himself. Also remember all the advice he got and all the remedies. It's not that those remedies wouldn't work it's more about how much do you want to take along. Well this may have worked for him although I'm not sure anymore if he had rope with him or not.
Something to keep stored away to use when one might need it.

This is just video to capture our hunt not for the purpose of adding it to social media but if it helps that is it's intent.

excellent!

Question on the way the lever log is lashed to pulley log. It looks like some sort of prusik or variation so that the directional force on the lever causes the the knot to tighten the lever log against the pulley log, no?

I think I know how I would/could do that with a pusik loop made from a section of the static line, but a little more detail on how you dd that would be great. thx

That would work also but no just a simple knot but leave it loose so you can stick the lever log in also. Then turn lever 90 to the pulley and start turning. Try it with a string and maybe pencils.

Good that you got lucky and there were some usable logs around.
I would stick to this:

and remove those metal end hooks. I bet this will be as heavy as your static rope, but much more versatile. Can be simply tied to trees, but if there are no trees, it could be tied to tent peg assemblies driven into the ground and you could still pull it out. With 7:1 mechanical advantage, it would be a snap to pull and even in lousy soil tent peg groups would most likely work. Or tie to a rock. If the terrain is very rocky around the water, a rock cam anchor would be first choice. It would require to know the approx. size of cracks in the rock, but if you hunt there quite a bit, you would know what kind of rock is around those lakes. .5-1" cracks, a cam anchor would be a great choice to anchor the pulley and pull whatever to shore....
I would save the weight for this equipment by chosing lighter weight clothes like string underwear and lightweight lamilite liners....

I had the misfortune of having a bull moose die in a pond a couple years ago.  I sure could have used this intelligence then.  It would have prevented 4 hours standing knee deep in freezing water.  We now carry a very lightweight climbing hoist to handle the chore if it ever happens again.  Mike

Wow...... can you tell me about the bow and the arrow set up with the Broadhead that took this moose?

I've shot some of these bows before and I've seen a few others. All of the fit and finish on these bows has been immaculate. And the ones I was shot I've been smooth quiet and did in the hand. But it's been awhile since I've shot one, so somebody give me a low down on this one.

Thanks

My first Moose ran out a little over  waist deep and died. We towed him in a ways with a boat until he grounded and from that point until way into the night, it was not fun. Now I a carry some rope and the hardware to set up a Z-rig, which you could run off your timber winch for some serious reduction.
