Chron Results: Fedora, Foley, Morrison
« on: March 29, 2008, 12:34:00 PM »
I've been wanting to get to a chronograph for a long time to compare my bows speeds.  I was able to do it today at an archery pro shop.  Below are the bows I shot and their average scores.  I do not post these as accurate or official or anything like that...just my informal results for whaterver they are worth for anyone interested.  All bows were shot with the same Easton XX75 2016 arrows with 140 grain tips that were a total of 482 grains per arros.  I draw 28 1/2".  All equipped with fast flight string with the Morrison with 14 strand and the others with 18 strand.  All bow had string nocks.  I shoot three fingers under.

Fedora 560 Hunter
53# @ 28"
otter fur silencers
177 fps

Fedora 560 T/D Hunter
52# @ 28"
string nock
otter fur silencers
180 fps

Foley T/D recurve
55# @ 28"
cat whiskers
rubber brush protectors on string
195 fps

Morrison Cheyenne New Limb Design
52# @ 28"
otter fur silencers
190 fps

Thanks for the numbers. It would be interesting to see how much difference a perfectly tuned arrow for each bow would make.

Does that Morrison have the foam core or the bamboo.
It's not the arrival, it's the journey.

Not a dramatic difference. Which of the bows did you think felt and shot the best?

I would say the difference between the Foley and the Fedora is quite dramatic-the Foley is only 2 lbs heavier and shooting nearly 20 FPS faster-very impressive!!

Interesting findings with the bows. I've owned a Morrison with two sets of limbs (old style cheyenne) and the numbers are very close to what I got.

The Fedora is suprising. I own a one piece 560 Hunter (10 yrs. old, new to me) and I was getting low 190's at 9 gr/lb, dacron string w/ silencers, and a draw just over 28".

Are the arrows for that one hitting the riser or flexing alot? I've had extra contact cost a lot in speed testing. Either way its fun playing with your toys  :)

I like all the bows but right now it is the Foley for my future.  IMHO it is hard to beat this bow in the T/D recurve for the price and performance.  I just ordered one with a Bocote and Cocobola Riser, red cedar limb laminations, bamboo core, special tillering, and it was $775 new.  This will be my hunting bow for next season.

The Silvertip is in the back of my mind also and I will chrono one against one of these bows at ETAR. It would need to be fast to suit my wants in a bow...it certainly is super smooth drawing.
I shoot heavy arrows so I like fast bows to compensate.

I bought the Morrison but it hurts my left shoulder for some reason so I just sold it on this site.  The Morrison is a fine hair faster than the Foley if all things were equal at least that is how it looks to me when I play around with some math (which I'm not that good at anyway).

The guys chrongraph only worked accurately for arrows 30" or less so I wasn't able to shoot my 30 1/2" 600 grain Beeman MFX arrows through it which would spine perfect for the Morrison and the Fedora T/D.  The results would have been more meaningful to me if I could have shot my actual arrows through it but I guess the results could seem the same.  The arrow spine could have affected results along with a bunch of other things.  These results are only meaningful to me for the way I shoot.

I was surprised the Fedora 560 was slow.  I had Mike take out three pounds from the bow and perhaps this had some effect on the design and affected the speed.  The Fedora T/D has a nice smooth draw.  It seems to me that often the bows in the speed range of the Fedora often smoother draws than some of the performance bows.  Surprisingly the foley for its performance has a smooth draw to me anyway.

I these three guys are in the top ten of bowyers and I would be happy with any of their bows.  :jumper:    :jumper:

If ya want fast, than do not look into the Schafers, they are great shooters but no where near as quick as the Foley or Morrison. They are more in line with the Widows, Robertsons and such. Shawn

Bob told me the foam core limbs would give you about another 6fps faster. The set of 45#ers I have are definitely fast for 45#.

I just picked up a Schafer and it is amazingly smooth and quiet-and the same as Shawn says.

The Morrison went out in the mail today to Detroit, Michigan.

In retrospect, I should have shot the Fedora with the endless loop strings as that is what is recommend for these bows.  STR8Shooter, I suspect the 560 was hitting the shelf as I shot it with a 2016 and it spines for me with a 2018 so your results are probably more valide than mine.

I think I would like to try the Fedora Extreme longbow next.  I am not a longbow guy but I have shot several and this is the one that I felt was the best of the bunch.  Fast, stable, well built for the long term like all Fedora bows.  I'll run it through the chrono with some endless ff if I get one and post the results using the same arrows.  I think I'm going to get my own chronograph...would be a lot easier.
