Met someone new tonight
« on: February 10, 2007, 11:50:00 PM »
Tonight me and my G/F went out to eat about 30 min. from my house and of course she wanted to go shopping so we went to the mall. While she was rambling in one of the stores i noticed a guy that had a leather stand set up and he sold belts, wallets, and also handmade knives. Well i went and talked to him and he turned out to be a really nice guy. He had deer horns and deer skins hanging all around his shop and we got to talking about hunting and i got on the subject of shooting recurves and trying to start making my own bows. I mentioned something about an arm guard and how i wanted to make one but i had to go an hour away just to get the leather. He asked me how big of a piece i needed and he said i'll brb. He went to the other side of the shop and pulled out a cardboard bow full of scrap leather and handed me a piece about 4 inches wide and 8 inches long and asked me if that would work. Honestly it couldn't of fit my arm any better! I asked him how much i owed him and we shook hands and he said you just paid for it! I just wanted to take a min. and say that. I know he could of told me no and alot of people probably would have but it was cool to meet someone like that, it reminded me of a lot of people on here. I haven't personally met any of you but since i've been a member on here i have talked to a lot of nice people that have given me lots of good info. So thank you to everyone that has helped me from explaining something simple to helping start building my own board bows!!

I had a similiar experience.  I went into a shop that made leather garments for motorcyclists and asked if they had any scrap leather.  They filled up a shopping bag with some really great scraps.  When I asked how much, they said no charge.

There are some really fine people in the trad and leatherworking world.
