Does anyone have an advice for beginners in archery?
« on: December 10, 2018, 02:10:35 AM »
I've got interest in hunting for over five years but i haven't seen where to learn the tricks and tips on hunting. I saw one site that is based on bow tricks but will love to hear from any of the best archers here.

Welcome! Silly rabbit tricks are for kids  :goldtooth: Think u will find in your hunting journey there are no magic tricks or short cuts to success. Keys to success are time and effort. The ability to fail time and time again with the tenacity to learn from them and not quit. If u can do that I think u will do just fine.

If it's hunting whitetails you are seeking info on I highly reccomend all the brothers of the bow stuff to get you headed in the right direction and get those wheels turning.

Good Luck

Welcome. You’re goung to hear many ideas all well intentioned. My advise is to learn form before you even shoot. The best way is through a string bow.
Correct form involves stance, grip, drawing, aiming, anchor, release and follow through just for starters.
Get w someone knowledgeable preferably a good instructor to help you. There was a time instructors were very few and everyone shot differently but the instructor will cut your learning curve way down and help you avoid mistakes.
Instructors come in different facets. The way I teach is easily convertible from traditional, compound. All that’s required is slight variations. Some guys teach dif anchors for strictly target archery w vertical bows.
If you decide to go that route and use sights make sure the fellow is familiar with them.
Using a bow before you learn form will have you trying to decipher hitting a target while you’re learning form. It’s not real easy to learn two things at the exact time and give 100% to both.
Any questions feel free to pm me and I’ll help any way I can

You can find a lot of info on this forum sir. And you can start with the information for new people posted above your thread. Yes, above all these topics there's some sticky posts where you'll find the answers to many of your questions.

So there's your first tip .....observe and absorb. 😁

And don't worry, you're not alone.... all those that posted before me don't even know it's there either.....🤣🤣🤣

Shooting?...check out the stickies at the top of the shooters forum.  You will find out proper form, alignment, and the Magic T....its a GREAT shooting reference, as dozens and dozens of folks have learned to shoot over the years from this forum. Especially those the don't have access or the funds for a coach.

And, avoid broadbrush nay sayers.

Have fun and WELCOME!

Perseverance  Perseverance  Perseverance  Perseverance  Perseverance  Perseverance

And have fun with it....

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

As BG67 stated consistent form trumps all, i.e. a shooting machine will still deliver incorrectly spined arrows in a tight group.  The quickest way to get there is find a good coach and bypass all the form flaws the rest of us have stubbornly ingrained for 25 years (some of which I've just recently and reluctantly admitted to, lol)

You can read books, watch videos, all of that, but nothing beats having a good mentor.   :coffee:

Go light on the bow weight and put aside bowhunting for now. Get accurate first.
The biggest thing facing you besides Accuracy is tracking skills which can only be learned from experience . That being said try to hookup with some Bowhunters who know what they are doing. “The hunt after the shot” as they say. Very challenging and something that cannot be learned from a book.

Lots of great advice will come your way, as there are many excellent archers and woodsmen on this site. Still, you need to do the work. First is the home work. Read and search the net for information about your quarry. Yes, you can learn a lot from a book such as characteristics, preferred habitat, food preferences, etc. about your chosen game. This general information is very useful. However, the book is not enough. You must get into the field and do the scouting. You must learn travel routes, bedding areas, feeding areas, prevalent winds, etc. on the particular ground you will be hunting. Once the book and the field experience begin to mesh, you will start seeing more game and will learn the best stand locations. This is not an overnight learning curve, but getting out and doing the work is fun, especially if you mix in some stump shooting with the scouting. You must be a proficient archer. Somebody mentioned a good mentor. I sure wish I had enjoyed the benefit of a proficient veteran bowhunter when I started. a GOOD mentor can really help a lot. Also, remember this: No matter how much you learn, you will never know it all, and the game will fool you much more often than you fool the animal. That is what makes it so fun. Remember this is a never ending journey. One last thing - once you develop your skills, be sure to pass them along to somebody coming behind you. Have fun. This is absolutely the most significant piece of advice I can give you.
Sam

Rob DiStefano, is a member of TANG and Admin of this site, ..
. I'm sure he'll be along shortly.......

Oh, and I would strongly recommend getting in on a group hunt. No matter your experience jump in ....you'll learn more in 4 or 5 days and you will in 2 or 3 years.  We have a group going out to Texas during the first week of February. Feel free to join us if you can and I'll be your mentor.

The biggest thing to remember through any of your archery journeys:

Have fun. If you aren't enjoying it, you are doing it wrong.

As for hunting, get out there. No day in the woods is wasted, regardless if you see anything or not.

In this day in age, a lot of guys have forgotten how much fun and rewarding it is to hunt small game. Don't ever pass up an opportunity to hunt squirrels and rabbits or other small game. I learned more about deer hunting while squirrel hunting than I ever did anywhere else.

That's all I got. Get to it and don't be afraid to post up. Welcome to the site!  :wavey:

Too funny. After telling someone I killed a 2000 pound Buffalo, they said I guess you're hunting is over......

I said no I'm going to Texas to hunt rabbits in 2 weeks.....

Now that is the beauty of traditional bowhunting.
