Narrowing limbs
« on: December 22, 2018, 06:35:31 PM »
Technically......I’ve never narrowed limbs. I just clean the blank up and go with that.  However, I have changed where I start my taper. Most of the time I start taper at fades, a couple I started taper an inch back.

This is as much food for thought as a question. When you narrow limbs, do you still maintain the center of the blank?  I’m thinking of narrowing limbs on my next build. Which won’t be for awhile, deer season is open til February.  :bigsmyl:
But I’m thinking of narrowing to one side. This would bring the bow closer to center shot without sacrificing riser thickness in the sight window.

Thoughts?

Hmmmm
So the center of the grip needs to be shifted as well? Narrowed on thumb side?

Narrow the whole blank to the width you want then find your center to work off of.

I have no experience with this but common sense tells me that you can put the window where ever you want as long as it is strong enough to handle the stresses and not twist...  But I think it is pretty much a must to center the grip with the limbs...  So if you take 3/16" off one side of the limbs take 3/16" off the same side of the grip...  Simple as that...  Problem may arise when you weaken the area around and just below the shelf...  You might want to add a stringer in there...  Some call it and I-beam...

I always narrow the limbs on every bow I make as long as I have draw weight to spare , I never narrow into the fades I usually start my front view taper out side the fades and narrow equally I usually scribe pencil lines on each side of the limbs and take the limbs down slowly stringing & testing as I go ,the center never changes threw the riser, narrowing the riser can be optional it doesn't have any effect performance mass wise , it's amazing how much performance you can gain losing width but there is a point of no return to on each design to...lol

Sure you can narrow a board bow.  A long board sander works well as it helps prevent dips and high spots.

I'm not much of a All wood bowyer, but different woods have different limits.  A great learning experience opportunity.

Sounds like a good bit of wisdom there, Monty...  Sometimes it's the little statements like that, that a lot of people find out years later...   "Oh... So that is was what he was talking about"...   I wish I could see into a lot of your guys minds...  But Maybe not some...

And Mike you were right...  It was like picking pepper out of fly chit...  7 bows later and I only gained 1fps...  But it was a great learning experience...  And I put a few more tricks up my sleeve...
