Osage Seed
« on: March 30, 2008, 05:24:00 PM »
Hey Gang,
I have some osage apples that I was going to plant this spring. My wife (Little Oak) has suffered a serious back injury and is headed for surgery any day.I will not have time to work with these this spring.I hate to see them go to waste.
If any one is interested in them I would be happy to ship them to you. With this operation coming up things are kind of tight around here. I would ask that you cover the shipping cost.
Please realize that these apples are ready to process and plant. Meaning they aint pretty. They are soft , squishy and moldy. They would have to be shipped in something like a freezr container.
Keep in mind that one apple means a whole lot of trees.I don't know of a fair way to do this depending on the response. First come first served I guess. If you need info of planting I would be happy to help. These are hardy Nebraska osage.I planted one apple last spring in a twenty foot row and got hundreds of seedlings. They my have to wait till fall for planting.
If any one is interested let me know and how many.

                      Take care,
                                Ed  :archer:

Good luck to you and your wife with the surgery. I have a few I found locally here that arent too pretty now either. You mash them up into a slush and pour that into a row right? Just double checking.
How long until the trees are big enough for staves?
Im surprised more people havent jumped on this already...

An osage I recently cut for staves had 43 rings. It sprouted about the time I was born,,, 1964!

Hope everything turns out for you and the little Ms.

Yup. I just wait till they are nice and ripe (Rotten). Put them in a 5 gal. bucket with some water and start mashin. I get them into a watery mush and pour them into a trench about 2" deep. My method aint real scientific but it works.

                   Best wishes,

Prayers for you and your wife.
Would like a couple to plant, if possible.
Will PM you.
Thanks, JAG
ps, I know my grandchilders' neighbors will hate me for this ( I don't have any grand kids, yet) but would love to fill all the fence lines on my farm with 'em!
